HERE WE GO: Chelsea might have already settled one position in Enzo Maresca’s squad despite ongoing transfer uncertainties.
Chelsea continue to make significant moves in the transfer market as they prepare for the 2024/25 season. The latest addition to their squad is United States international Caleb Wiley, who signed from MLS side Atlanta United on Monday afternoon.
Wiley, a 19-year-old left-back, has committed to a six-year contract with Chelsea, with an option for an additional year. Since making his first-team debut in MLS in 2022, Wiley has impressed, also making his senior national team debut 14 months later.
Known for his attacking prowess and ability to play further up the left flank, Wiley has contributed six goals and seven assists for Atlanta. However, Chelsea fans may need to wait to see him in action as Wiley is set to represent the U.S. in the 2024 Olympic Games. He might also spend part of the 2024/25 season on loan at Strasbourg in France.
The addition of Wiley strengthens Chelsea’s left-back options for the future, potentially resolving previous concerns in this position. With Ben Chilwell out injured and Marc Cucurella struggling for form last season, there was significant speculation about Chelsea needing a new left-back.
Cucurella has since regained his form and ended the last season strongly, carrying that momentum into Euro 2024, where he played a key role in Spain’s victory over England in the final.
As things stand, Cucurella seems poised to be Chelsea’s first-choice left-back under Maresca, given his versatility in playing centrally or in a back three. While Chilwell will likely start in pre-season, Cucurella’s role will become clearer in the season opener against Manchester City.
Chelsea also has Renato Veiga, a recent signing from FC Basel, who could be used as a left-back if needed. Although Veiga primarily played as a holding midfielder for Basel in 2023/24, he also has experience as a centre-back and left-back. He is currently training with the first team, but it remains to be seen whether he will stay or go out on loan to further his development.
Levi Colwill provides additional cover at left-back, though he is expected to play as a centre-back. Chelsea academy player Ishe Samuels-Smith is another option for the left-back position.
Given the current form of Cucurella and the array of options available, Chelsea seems well-positioned at left-back heading into the new season.
