Chelsea is set to receive a £5 million bonus from Real Madrid due to a smart transfer clause.
Despite no longer playing for Real Madrid, Chelsea is set to receive an additional £5 million from the transfer deal involving Eden Hazard’s move to the Bernabeu in 2019.
The deal, which saw Hazard depart for Real Madrid in the summer of 2019 for a total package valued at around £130 million, included £40 million in performance-related add-ons.
Hazard, then 28 years old and entering the final year of his contract, was considered a masterclass negotiation by Chelsea’s hierarchy.
The deal became even more favorable for Chelsea when Hazard retired from professional football last year after scoring just four La Liga goals for Real Madrid. Despite his departure, Chelsea continues to profit from the transfer.
According to The Telegraph, one of the add-ons was activated recently when Real Madrid reached the Champions League final after eliminating Manchester City in the quarter-finals and Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.
Regardless of the final outcome against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final, Real Madrid is obliged to pay Chelsea £5 million as part of the agreement.
Although Hazard terminated his contract with Real Madrid last summer, a year earlier than planned, the terms of his original five-year contract and the transfer agreement remain valid.
This shrewd deal, orchestrated by Chelsea’s former chief executive Marina Granovskaia, provides a welcome financial boost for the club as they strive to adhere to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.
