Arsenal has a clear opportunity to pursue an ideal alternative to Benjamin Sesko following Liverpool’s recent decision.
In the 2023/24 season, the 28-year-old contributed to 40 goals in 53 games across all competitions. Compared to Isak and Sesko, the former Brentford striker has had a significantly greater impact, but this has led to a firm transfer stance from Aston Villa.
Despite Unai Emery recently signing a new long-term contract, it seems unlikely that Watkins will leave Villa. However, Villa might need to make a major sale to comply with profit and sustainability regulations, and Watkins could be the player sacrificed. If this happens, Arsenal might shift their transfer focus to Watkins, as there is now a clear opportunity to pursue him.
On Thursday, reports suggested Liverpool were interested in signing Watkins. However, the Liverpool Echo, football.london’s sister publication, has clarified that Liverpool are not pursuing the striker. As a result, Arsenal would have no competition for Watkins, who would likely be open to a move that would fulfill his childhood dream.
“I’m an Arsenal fan so Thierry Henry was my [idol]. He’s unbelievable to watch. He was the idol growing up really,” Watkins revealed in an interview during his time at Brentford.
A few weeks ago, Watkins appeared rather solemn at Villa’s awards evening, which coincided with Manchester City overtaking Arsenal in the Premier League table after a 2-0 victory against Tottenham, thus taking control of the title race.
