“I understand, and I confirmed directly with the player’s agent that one of our players is set to join them,” an Arsenal star said in response to reports that he has agreed to join one of Arsenal’s Premier League rivals.
Arsenal misfit Aaron Ramsdale has responded to rumors that he has agreed to join Newcastle United in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021 for £24 million and quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper, making 78 appearances in his first two seasons. However, with the arrival of David Raya on loan from Brentford, Ramsdale’s future at the club has been uncertain. This season, he has made only six Premier League appearances under Mikel Arteta.
Raya is expected to join Arsenal permanently this summer, fueling speculation that Arsenal might entertain offers for Ramsdale, who has two years left on his contract. Chelsea, who have been interested in Ramsdale for a while, are monitoring the situation as their manager Mauricio Pochettino has alternated between goalkeepers Dorde Petrovic and Robert Sanchez this season.
Sky Sports journalist James Green recently claimed on an episode of Highbury Squad that Ramsdale had agreed to join Newcastle. Green stated, “I understand and found out directly from the player’s agent that one of our players is off to Newcastle and a deal has been agreed. It’s my understanding that Aaron Ramsdale has agreed to join Newcastle in the summer. This information comes from someone very close to his agent.”
However, Ramsdale denied these rumors on Twitter, tweeting, “News to me [laughing emoji],” refuting the speculation about a deal with Newcastle.
Arteta’s handling of Ramsdale has divided Arsenal fans. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann expressed confusion over Ramsdale’s reduced role. Lehmann told The Daily Mail, “I never understood the Ramsdale decision. If you have a good, brave English ‘keeper at a big English club doing well, why bring in a Spanish guy who has never played at that level? The ‘keeper is the most important position in the team. If I were Ramsdale, I don’t know how I would react because it’s not easy at that age. When you’re older, it’s different.”
Another former Arsenal and England goalkeeper, David Seaman, believes Ramsdale should leave Arsenal to advance his career. On the Seaman Says podcast, he mentioned Chelsea and West Ham as possible destinations. “You aren’t going to develop being a number two. You’re going to get left behind in the pecking order because other goalkeepers will start playing,” Seaman said. “As an Arsenal fan, I don’t really want Aaron Ramsdale to go. But as an ex-England goalkeeper, I want to see another keeper developing. I think he could go to Chelsea or West Ham to get more first-team action.”
The debate among Arsenal supporters continues over whether Arteta has been fair to Ramsdale, whose future at the club remains uncertain.
