Breaking News: Former Chelsea star shares his observations on the current Chelsea squad.

Former Chelsea star Gary Cahill has made intriguing observations about the current squad at Stamford Bridge.

Over the past couple of years, the squad has undergone significant changes. Enzo Maresca, the new head coach, has inherited a young team with immense potential but limited experience.

In his first interview as Chelsea’s head coach, Maresca described the squad as “very good” via the Blues YouTube channel earlier in July. It remains to be seen if he maintains this view after spending more time with the team, especially given the pressure of his first Premier League managerial role.

Gary Cahill’s Optimism About the Chelsea Squad

Gary Cahill is optimistic about the Chelsea squad, recognizing their potential to succeed. He believes the young players need time to secure their first major trophy. Although some squad members have previously won trophies with Chelsea, the club has gone two consecutive seasons without silverware.

“Everything that’s involved in the settlement of a new squad like that and young players takes a little bit of time,” Cahill told The Charlotte Observer. “There’s certainly the ability in the squad, and just for me as a Chelsea fan now, (it’s about) just watching it grow and almost trying to nurture that.”

He added, “It’s difficult because Chelsea comes with an expectation of winning things and competing season after season after season, nor should that change. These players are slowly learning that… The first time that this young group wins something, it will almost catapult (them) to that next level.”

Enzo Maresca’s Winning Background

Despite a small sample size, Maresca has a winning track record as a coach. He was the assistant manager at Manchester City during their treble-winning 2022/23 campaign, and his philosophy closely aligns with Pep Guardiola’s.

Additionally, Maresca led Leicester City to the Championship league title and promotion during his one-year tenure at the King Power Stadium last season.

There is hope that Maresca can instill a winning mentality in the Chelsea dressing room.
