Arsenal now know Mikel Arteta’s next transfer target after deciding on an alternative to Thomas Partey.

Martin Zubimendi has once again addressed the possibility of leaving Real Sociedad this summer, as he continues to attract attention from clubs across Europe. The 25-year-old, currently with Spain at the European Championship, remains a highly sought-after player.

Arsenal have been long-term admirers of Zubimendi, who has three years remaining on his contract at La Real. However, no progress has been made toward a deal, and Arsenal are exploring other options, according to football.london. In January, when a new midfielder was a top priority, Zubimendi was highly regarded by Mikel Arteta, but he has shown no desire to push for a move.

This summer, Arsenal face a potential midfield overhaul with Thomas Partey entering the final year of his contract, making his departure a possibility. Fabio Vieira and Emile Smith Rowe might also leave, while Jorginho, at 32, is not a long-term solution.

Zubimendi has been considered as a replacement for any of these players. Another player Arsenal have monitored closely is Bruno Guimaraes. However, a move for Zubimendi seems increasingly unlikely.

Earlier this month, Zubimendi played down transfer speculation. “I mainly focus on benefiting the national team and not on what I can achieve in this European Championship to impress other clubs,” he said about his future. “My energy is concentrated on winning with the group, and any individual success will follow. I’m not thinking about this now.”

He further elaborated on the promising progress at La Real, where he is a key player for Imanol Alguacil’s team. “It’s not about specific years, but a long-term project with many years in European competition,” he said. “The next step is to get closer to the top four, which is challenging. The project is there, but improving on last season is not easy.”

La Real finished sixth last season, a drop from their Champions League qualification in the 2022/23 season. Despite not being overpowered by Paris Saint-Germain in Europe, they failed to make a significant impact in the two-legged tie and were eliminated.

Next season, Zubimendi and La Real will compete in the Europa League. This hasn’t diminished his appeal to top clubs, and he continues to attract attention during Euro 2024. However, Zubimendi remains focused on his current role and is not planning to leave yet.

“I can’t say because I haven’t thought about it,” he said regarding a transfer. “I feel very appreciated by those I care about, and for now, a transfer seems distant.

“Do questions about my future bother me? Initially, yes, but now I understand. I know how football, markets, and journalism work. I have to accept it.”

Alguacil also expects Zubimendi to stay. “There have been rumours about Zubi with many big teams,” the coach said in May. “He is a great player; this year he showcased it in the Champions League. There has been a lot of talk for many weeks, it is good for the club and for the kid. Surely next year he will be here.”
